⚠️ Exam Traps
Trap #1 — First Muslim vs First Arab Invader

First Muslim invaders = Arabs as a group. First individual Arab/Muslim invader = Muhammad bin Qasim (712 CE). For questions using the phrase “first Muslim”, choose Arabs or Muhammad bin Qasim according to the context.

Trap #2 — Mahmud of Ghazni’s Objective

Mahmud of Ghazni invaded India to plunder wealth, not to establish permanent rule. Muhammad Ghori aimed to establish permanent rule. Their objectives were different.

Trap #3 — 17 Invasions vs 16th Invasion

Mahmud of Ghazni launched 17 invasions in total. The attack on the Somnath Temple in 1025–26 CE was his 16th invasion, not his 17th. Exams often present the incorrect 17th-invasion claim.

Trap #4 — Bhim I vs Bhim II

During the Somnath attack of 1025–26 CE, Gujarat was ruled by Bhim I, who was defeated. In 1178 CE at Patan, Bhim II defeated Muhammad Ghori. Do not confuse Bhim I with Bhim II.

Trap #5 — 1st vs 2nd Battle of Tarain

First Battle of Tarain (1191 CE) = Prithviraj Chauhan won. Second Battle of Tarain (1192 CE) = Muhammad Ghori won and Prithviraj was defeated. Reversing these results is a common mistake.

Trap #6 — Nalanda Destroyer

Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed Nalanda University, not Muhammad Ghori or Mahmud of Ghazni. Bakhtiyar was Ghori’s slave commander associated with Bengal.

Trap #7 — Al-Biruni’s Book

Al-Biruni wrote Tahqiq-i-Hind, also called Kitab-ul-Hind. Utbi wrote Kitab-ul-Yamini. Both were at Mahmud of Ghazni’s court. Firdausi’s Shahnama was also associated with his court, but it is Persian epic poetry, not a history of India.
