2. Definite Article — The

Used for a definite / certain person or thing.

Position of Articles
Article + Noun

  • a skill

  • a valuable skill
Article + Adverb + Adjective + Noun
  • He is a very good singer.
  • This is a very valuable skill.
  • The well prepared athletes.
⚡ QUICK RECALL The article always comes first in the noun phrase, but an intervening Adverb (modifying the Adjective) can sit between the Article and the Adjective — Article + Adverb + Adjective + Noun.
Difference Between A and An
A + Consonant Sound  ·  An + Vowel Sound Based on SOUND, not the actual letter
A + Consonant SoundAn + Vowel Sound
A bookAn heir
A uniformAn apple
A catAn umbrella
A manAn M.P. / M.L.A.
A unionAn hour
⚠ EXAM TRAP Go by the sound, not the spelling! "Uniform" and "union" start with a consonant sound (/j/, like "yoo") despite the vowel letter "u" — so they take "A". "Heir," "hour," and "M.P./M.L.A." start with a vowel sound despite consonant-looking spellings ("h" is silent in heir/hour; "M" is pronounced "em") — so they take "An".
SentenceCorrection
